Please join us for a Photographer’s Eye lecture about Mario G. Reyes. Gwen Muranaka will share images and memories of Reyes.
For more than four decades, Mario G. Reyes chronicled the important moments in the Japanese American community in Little Tokyo and the Southern California region as the photo editor of The Rafu Shimpo (Los Angeles Japanese Daily News), now in its 122nd year. Reyes passed away in January at 69, shortly after the Japanese American National Museum staged a retrospective of his work, Obras de Luz. He was born in Mexico City and immigrated with his family to LA when he was four years old and started working at The Rafu as a senior at Roosevelt High School. Reyes was a fixture in the Japanese American community for four decades at events such as Nisei Week, Obon festivals, Manzanar Pilgrimages, as well as covering youth sports and the Dodgers.
Gwen Muranaka, former Rafu Shimpo senior editor, worked alongside Reyes for more than twenty years. Muranaka is a writer and cartoonist who has worked for publications in Los Angeles and Tokyo, Japan. She was recognized with the Distinguished Journalist Award by the Society of Professional Journalists, Greater Los Angeles Chapter in 2023.
